Movement supports regulation

Therapy in motion

Walk-and-talk sessions replace the traditional office with the rhythm of the trail. Many clients find it easier to open up while moving—especially when sitting face-to-face feels intense.

Your therapist guides the session with the same clinical care you would receive indoors, adapted intentionally for an outdoor setting.

Clinical care on the trail

Walk-and-talk at Happy Camper Therapy is not a casual chat on a hike—it is licensed mental health care delivered in a thoughtfully chosen outdoor environment. Sessions follow clear therapeutic goals, ethical standards, and evidence-informed approaches including EMDR, attachment-informed work, and trauma-focused care when appropriate. Movement and nature support regulation so you can engage more fully in the work.

Why walk-and-talk works

When movement meets meaningful conversation

Research on nature exposure and physical activity supports improvements in mood, stress reduction, and cognitive flexibility. Side-by-side walking can reduce the intensity of eye contact, which many clients—especially those with anxiety, ADHD, or trauma histories—find freeing. Our clinicians structure each session so therapeutic depth is not sacrificed for the setting.

How sessions work

Structured, confidential, and paced for you

Each walk-and-talk session is led by a licensed therapist and includes:

  • A brief check-in and review of therapeutic goals
  • Side-by-side conversation at a comfortable walking pace
  • Grounding and regulation practices as needed on the trail
  • Integration of evidence-based methods when clinically indicated
  • Clear boundaries for confidentiality in shared outdoor spaces

Your therapist will discuss weather, footwear, accessibility, and privacy considerations before your first outdoor session.

Preparing for a first walk-and-talk therapy session

What to expect

Your first walk-and-talk session

Before meeting on the trail, you will complete intake and discuss goals, health considerations, and whether outdoor therapy is a good match. Your therapist will explain how confidentiality works in public spaces and what to wear for the weather and terrain.

Sessions typically last the same length as in-office visits. You set the pace—walking, pausing on the trail, or sitting on a bench when that supports the conversation.

If weather or accessibility makes an outdoor session unwise, your therapist will offer telehealth or in-office alternatives so your care stays consistent.
